CHAPTER ONE The Persian Nobody HE WASN’T BORN in a palace. He wasn’t born in Babylon, or Susa, or any great city. He was born in Anshan, a rugged, half-forgotten region on the edge of ancient Elam in southwestern Persia. No one feared Persia. No one cared. At the time, the Medes held the real power.
