CHAPTER FIVE
The Freedom File
AFTER BABYLON FELL, Cyrus didn’t just celebrate.
He broadcasted.
His message?
“I am your liberator. I restore order. I free the oppressed.”
And to make sure everyone remembered it, he carved it into clay:
The Cyrus Cylinder.
He blames Babylon’s fall on Nabonidus’s failure.
He claims Marduk chose Cyrus to rule.
He declares freedom for exiles, restoration of temples, and peace.
This wasn’t just victory speech.
It was political genius.
Freedom = loyalty.
Respect = obedience.
Among the exiles in Babylon were the Jews, who were taken from Jerusalem decades earlier.
Cyrus told them:
“Go home. Rebuild your temple.”
“Your god supports me.”
“I am your anointed one.”
And the Hebrew Bible reflects this.
Isaiah 45:1 calls Cyrus:
“The Lord’s anointed… whose right hand I have grasped.”
Cyrus becomes the only non-Jew called Messiah in the Bible.
Let that sink in.
A Persian king is written into Jewish scripture as God’s chosen one.
Cyrus didn’t free the Jews because he was merciful.
He freed them because loyal subjects rebuild faster.
He didn’t love diversity.
He understood that respect is cheaper than rebellion.
The Cyrus Cylinder wasn’t a moral document.
It was empire software.
And every ruler since?
Still runs the “freedom = compliance” script.
