CHAPTER THREE
1914–1925
1914 ARRIVES.
THE Watchtower said it would be the end.
Instead, a war begins.
But the world doesn’t collapse.
The anointed are not taken to heaven.
Paradise does not begin.
A new explanation is published.
It says, “Christ began ruling in heaven in 1914.”
“The time of the end has started.”
“The nations are now on borrowed time.”
New phrases appear.
“The invisible presence of Christ continues.”
“The harvest work increases.”
“The faithful must endure.”
A new date is set.
The Watchtower writes, “1925 will mark the resurrection of the ancient worthies.”
“Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will be resurrected.”
“They will rule on Earth as princes.”
The message is urgent.
“Millions now living will never die.”
“This system will not survive past 1925.”
“Prepare for the end of this world.”
In San Diego, a house is built.
It’s called Beth Sarim, House of Princes.
The Watchtower says, “This is for the resurrected men of old.”
“God’s servants will return to lead the new world.”
1925 arrives.
No resurrection.
No princes.
No paradise.
The house remains empty.
New light is printed.
“The end is still near.”
“We misunderstood the timing.”
“Jehovah’s purpose cannot fail.”
The message continues.
“Be loyal. Be faithful. Wait on Jehovah.”
Time shifts.
The presses do not stop.
The next date approaches.
