CHAPTER ONE

What Even Is the Watchtower?

IT STARTED IN 1879 with a man named Charles Taze Russell and a magazine called the Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence.

He wasn’t a prophet.
He wasn’t a pastor.
He was a publisher.

From the beginning, the Watchtower didn’t just teach. It predicted.

It said Jesus returned invisibly in 1874.
The old world would end in 1914.
The righteous would survive.
The wicked would die.
And paradise would begin.

That was the first prediction.

It didn’t come true.
So they updated it and kept publishing.

The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society became the core of a religion, what we now call Jehovah’s Witnesses.

They follow the magazine.
They call it “the truth.”

This book walks through what the Watchtower actually said, in its own words, through time.

No summaries.
No opinions.
Just the articles, the quotes, and the “new light” as it changed, as it shifted, and as it kept coming.

You won’t find commentary here.
Just the record.

From 1879 to now, this is what the Watchtower actually says.

Let’s begin.
