CHAPTER TWELVE
Spiritual But Not Religious
IF YOU SAY you are “spiritual but not religious,” here’s what that means.
You believe something is out there.
But not a man in the sky.
Not a book of rules.
Not a church with pews and tithes and guilt.
You don’t follow a single tradition.
You build your own.
You might believe in energy.
That everything vibrates, that thoughts carry frequency, that the universe responds to intention.
You might believe in manifestation, that reality is shaped by mindset, alignment, gratitude, or belief.
You might believe in chakras, auras, or third eyes. Inner structures of self that govern your emotional or spiritual health.
You may read tarot.
Follow horoscopes.
Burn sage.
Keep crystals.
See repeating numbers as signs.
Speak of the universe as if it’s listening, because maybe it is.
You might believe in past lives, that you’ve been here before, and will be again.
You might believe in karma, not as punishment, but as balance.
You might believe in ego death, inner child healing, or shadow work. That your wounds shape your world until you confront them.
You believe in vibes.
Not just as slang, but as a way to read people, rooms, and relationships.
You trust your gut.
You feel out what’s true.
You resist dogma, but might still believe in destiny.
You probably meditate.
You probably journal.
You might talk to your guides.
You might listen to downloads.
You might believe your soul chose this path, these lessons, and this lifetime.
You might say “everything happens for a reason.”
You might not.
But you probably believe that pain carries purpose.
That trauma can be transmuted.
That life is a classroom.
That you’re here to evolve.
You don’t care about being “right.”
You care about being real.
You don’t fear hell, because you don’t buy it.
You don’t seek heaven, because you think it’s already here if you wake up enough to see it.
This is a flexible system.
A remix.
A search.
You don’t want control.
You want connection.
You want peace.
You want to feel whole without having to say a creed to get it.
