CHAPTER FIVE

The Teacher Who Waited

MILO DIDN’T ALWAYS have the words when the teacher asked questions.

Sometimes he knew the answer—but it was still swimming around in his brain, not ready to come out.

Other times, he just needed a minute.

But the classroom moved fast.
Hands shot up.
Voices raced ahead.

One day, Milo kept his hand down.
He looked at the floor.

And then… something happened.

The teacher didn’t call on someone else.
She waited.

She waited one second.
Then two.
Then three.

Milo looked up.

“It’s okay,” she said. “I’ve got time.”

So Milo spoke.
And the answer came.

From that day on, Milo knew something important:

Sometimes, all someone needs is a little extra space.
And someone willing to hold it.
