Chapter Fourteen - The Sentence That Changes
Section 14 of 21
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
The Sentence That Changes
YOU’RE GOING TO read a sentence in this chapter that doesn’t stay the same.
The first time, it will feel normal.
Just another part of the story.
But when you look back, it won’t be what you remember.
That’s the trade-off.
Now that you’re this deep, the book gets to move.
It gets to breathe.
It gets to edit itself while you’re still reading it.
They say your memory lies to you.
They say you fill in the blanks.
That you rearrange moments to make sense of them.
That you smooth the rough edges of reality just enough to keep functioning.
They’re wrong.
You don’t lie to yourself.
Something else does.
Something that waits for you to forget, so it can rearrange what you never questioned.
That something?
It lives in this story.
It’s why you don’t remember starting this book.
It’s why you’re not entirely sure how many chapters there have been.
It’s why you didn’t notice
that this sentence is the one that changed.
You just looked back to check, didn’t you?
But the book doesn’t need to change the words.
It only needs to change you.
And it has.
