CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED ONE

Why We Keep Telling These Stories

THERE’S NO SUCH thing as a superhero. We know that. We’ve always known that. Nobody’s coming down from the sky. Nobody’s snapping their fingers to undo the damage. Nobody’s going to fly, swing, run, or blast their way into saving us from ourselves. But we still keep telling these stories.

Why?

Because deep down, we want to believe there’s something stronger than fear. Something louder than pain. Something in us that doesn’t die, even when everything else does.

The costumes change. The cities change. The names, the powers, the eras, all of it shifts.
But the need stays the same, we want to know that hope survives the fire. That good doesn’t have to mean perfect. That broken people can still choose the right thing. That there’s meaning in the fight, even if we lose.

And maybe most of all, we need permission. Permission to scream. Permission to get back up. Permission to be angry. To be soft. To be more than one thing. These stories give us that. They let us imagine the version of ourselves that doesn’t fold. The one that feels everything and still shows up.

And maybe that’s the real point. Not that there are heroes out there. But that there’s something heroic about just staying human. About choosing kindness when cruelty would be easier. About not giving up, even when you want to. About turning the page when you’re not sure what comes next.

That’s why we keep telling them. Not because we need to be saved. But because we’re still trying to remember how to save ourselves.

And if you ever forget who you are? Go back to the beginning. There’s a reason you loved these stories. They were always trying to remind you.
