CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Escalator Showdown: The Descent Into Destiny

THE ESCALATOR HUMS like it's got secrets.
Two stories tall. Shiny handrails.
The kind of ride that feels spiritual if you squint.

I step on.
So does a man in a red hoodie under a trench coat, five steps above me.

He’s holding something.
Black.
Worn.
Rectangular.

My wallet.

I freeze.
He turns slightly.
Smirks.

“You left this at the gas station.”

I don’t know whether to bow, cry, or start a side quest.
Instead, I just whisper:

“Are you… the cashier?”

He nods.
But not like yes.
Like you have much to learn.

A mall cop rolls by on a Segway, eating a Cinnabon.
He sees us.
Slows.
Nods.
Keeps rolling.

The trench coat man tosses me the wallet.
I catch it.
It’s warm.
It feels like closure.

We reach the bottom.
He steps off and vanishes into the pretzel crowd.
Like a spirit.
Like a deeply underpaid angel.

I check the wallet.
All my cards.
All my cash.
A receipt I don’t remember printing.

“Congrats. You made it to Chapter 16.”

Scrawled in blue pen.

I look up.
The mall is quieter now.
Sunset leaks through the skylight.
