Rebrand or Retreat


OCTOBER 28, 2021.

Mark Zuckerberg stood in front of a sleek digital backdrop and announced that Facebook Inc. would now be called Meta.

The logo? A warped infinity symbol.
The mission? No longer just to connect people, but to build the metaverse.

It sounded ambitious. Futuristic. Borderline sci-fi. But to anyone watching closely, it also sounded like escape.

Facebook was battered.
Cambridge Analytica.
Election scandals.
Whistleblowers.
Internal memos leaking like a bad faucet.

The brand had become toxic. Even among techies. Even among teenagers. Facebook was now where your uncle argued about vaccines and your high school friend posted baby photos you didn’t ask for.

So Mark did what he always did:
Rewrote the code.

Meta wasn’t just a name change. It was a repositioning of power.

If Facebook was a garden that went rotten,
Meta would be a world you could design yourself.

Enter: Oculus. Virtual reality headsets. Purchased years earlier for $2 billion, Oculus had been quietly improving in the background. Now it was Meta’s golden goose.

The vision?

A digital realm where you could work, socialize, game, and live with your avatar, your digital home, and your branded digital clothes… all powered by Meta infrastructure.

No ads.
No feed.
No mess.

Just a clean, immersive world.

The Matrix, but with meeting rooms.

It was bold.
It was expensive.
And it was… not ready.

Early demos were awkward. Avatars had no legs. Offices looked like Wii Sports. Adoption was slow. Critics mocked it as a billionaire fever dream, the Sims with worse graphics.

But Mark kept going.

He poured tens of billions into Reality Labs.
Reorganized teams.
Changed product priorities.
Bet the farm.

Why?

Because he knew two things:

  1. Facebook couldn’t grow forever.
  2. Whoever built the next platform would rule the next era.

And Mark doesn’t like playing on other people’s platforms.

Apple was locking down data.
Google was eating mobile.
TikTok was capturing youth.

The feed was slipping.

So he ran to the horizon.

Not because Meta was the future… but because it was the only future he still had a shot at owning.
