CHAPTER FIVE

Susanoo, the Storm

BORN FROM IZANAGI’S nose during his post-Yomi cleansing, Susanoo-no-Mikoto enters the world with feral force.

He is storm, sea, and sorrow.
A god of rage, tears, and transgression.

While his sister Amaterasu shines with stable authority, Susanoo is volatile. A disruptive force that doesn’t fit neatly into the celestial order. He weeps constantly, disturbing the peace of heaven. When given control over the seas, he refuses to take his role seriously, obsessed instead with finding his dead mother, Izanami, in Yomi.

He is grief incarnate.
But also ego.
And danger.

The gods grow tired of his tantrums.
Amaterasu confronts him.
To prove he means no harm, Susanoo proposes a challenge, a kind of divine ritual duel.

He offers a sword. She offers jewels.
Each god chews and spits out the other’s item, creating new deities from the breath.
Amaterasu’s gods are female.
Susanoo’s are male.
He declares victory.

But it’s not enough.
His chaos grows darker.

He tears up Amaterasu’s rice fields, flings excrement in her palace, and in a final insult, he hurls a flayed horse into her sacred weaving hall, killing a maiden.

This is too far.
Amaterasu flees.

She seals herself inside a cave, plunging the world into darkness, a moment we’ll explore next. But first, Susanoo is punished.

He is cast down from the High Plain of Heaven, stripped of his divine rank, and banished to wander the earth.

But here, on the mortal plane, Susanoo’s myth shifts.

He encounters a grieving family, their daughters devoured one by one by a monstrous eight-headed serpent called Yamata-no-Orochi.

Susanoo agrees to help.

He tricks the beast by offering it eight vats of sake, one for each head. When the serpent passes out drunk, he cuts it down, head by head, tail by tail, until the beast lies dead.

Inside the serpent’s tail, he finds a sacred sword: Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the Grass-Cutting Blade.

This weapon will become part of the Three Imperial Regalia, along with the Mirror and the Jewel, and be passed down through generations of emperors.

Susanoo is a menace, a brother, a hero, and a contradiction.

He is the necessary chaos that threatens the order, but also guards it with teeth when it counts.
