CHAPTER NINE
Korihor, Zoramites, and the Philosophers Get Wrecked
ALMA 30–35
Enter Korihor.
He’s smart.
He’s loud.
And he doesn’t believe.
He travels from city to city preaching against the church.
He calls belief a crutch.
Says prophecy is fake.
Claims priests are using fear to control people.
Says there's no Christ, no afterlife, no need for commandments.
People listen.
Some believe him.
Some just enjoy watching the disruption.
He’s brought before Alma.
Alma doesn’t get angry.
He just asks questions.
Korihor demands a sign. Proof that God exists.
Alma says:
“You already have one. The world. The scriptures. The prophets. Your own conscience.”
Korihor keeps pushing.
So Alma gives him one.
He says:
“If you deny again, you’ll be struck mute.”
Korihor opens his mouth.
Nothing comes out.
He’s silenced.
Literally.
Later, Korihor writes a confession:
He always knew there was a God.
He was deceived by the devil, who appeared and told him what to say.
He asks Alma to lift the curse.
Alma says no.
Korihor is cast out.
He begs for food.
Eventually, he’s trampled to death in a city full of dissenters.
The people never forget it.
Then comes another threat. Not atheist this time, but elitist.
The Zoramites.
They build synagogues with tall platforms, the Rameumptom.
Each week, they climb it, stretch out their hands, and recite the same exact prayer:
“God, we thank Thee that we are better than everyone else.
We are chosen.
We know there will be no Christ.
And we know everyone else is wrong.”
Then they step down.
Never think of God again until the next week.
Alma and his team go to them.
They try to teach.
They try to reach the poor, who aren’t even allowed inside the synagogues.
To them, Alma gives one of the most famous sermons in the book.
He says:
Faith is like a seed.
You plant it.
You nourish it.
You watch it grow.
If it swells inside you, it’s good.
If it withers, let it go.
Belief starts small.
You don’t need to know everything.
Just enough to start.
Amulek preaches next.
He warns them:
Do not delay repentance.
Do not let pride shut your ears.
God is merciful, but He is not mocked.
Some believe.
Most do not.
But the tension is rising.
The Zoramites will not stay quiet for long.
