CHAPTER FOUR

What Are the Odds You’re Alive?

LET’S TAKE A break from casinos, weather, and coin flips.

Let’s talk about you.

Not your job.
Not your name.
Not your social security number.

You. Alive. Breathing. Existing. Right now.

What are the odds?

Let’s start simple.
Every time a human is conceived, it begins with a race of roughly 100 million sperm.

Only one wins.

Not one in a hundred.
One in a hundred million.

You’re a biological lottery ticket that hit the jackpot on day one.

And that’s just to get born.

Now trace it back.
Your parents had to meet.
So did their parents.
And their parents.
And their parents.

Every single ancestor in your bloodline
—going back thousands of generations
had to survive war, famine, disease, heartbreak, accidents, and time…

…and still somehow reproduce, at just the right moment,
to eventually get to you.

If even one of them had missed?

No you.

Now let’s go bigger.
Life only exists on Earth because of a ridiculous list of “coincidences”:

  • Earth is just the right distance from the sun.
  • The atmosphere traps just the right gases.
  • Water exists in all three states (solid, liquid, gas).
  • The moon stabilizes the planet’s tilt.
  • Jupiter protects us from asteroid swarms.

Change any one of these?

No life.

Some scientists once tried to calculate the odds of you existing—exactly as you are.

Their estimate?

1 in 10^2,685,000.

That’s a 10 followed by over 2 million zeroes.

To put that in perspective:

  • The number of atoms in the known universe is around 10^80.
  • Your odds? Way more rare.

You weren’t just unlikely.

You were basically impossible.

And yet… here you are.

This means everything had to go right.
Every near-miss.
Every chain reaction.
Every random chance…

…led to this moment.

Led to you, reading these words, breathing this air, asking yourself:

“What are the odds?”

The answer?

Low. Incomprehensibly low.

But not zero.

And that means this:

If something as impossible as you can exist… what else might be possible?
