Build-a-Sandwich Therapy
SUBWAY IS NOT a restaurant. It’s a concept. A sacred ritual where you step forward, glass barrier separating you from your deepest cravings, and say without flinching, "Yeah, can I get double meat?"
Subway was the place where food met freedom. A culinary sandbox where your 8-year-old brain could go, “I want turkey, cheddar, and every single vegetable you offer, please, with sweet onion sauce and maybe also ranch.” Chaos. Glorious chaos.
I remember when I was a kid, it was too much to handle. My dad got tuna with provolone, lettuce, and onion, simple. Dependable. So I copied him. For a long time, that was it. The same sandwich, every time. Until I branched out and realized… this was food therapy. You didn’t just eat at Subway, you expressed yourself at Subway.
Because that’s the magic of it, right? You walk in with a vibe, maybe sad, stressed, euphoric, hungover, post-gym, or pre-job interview, and they give you a sandwich that gets you. A warm, squishy edible therapist wrapped in parchment paper and dashed with black pepper.
Sometimes the veggies are a little tired, sure. But that’s part of the charm. The lettuce may wilt, but the ambition never does. You’re building a sandwich and a memory, layer by layer. A little bit of chaos, a little bit of order. You are the architect of your own meal.
And then there's the myth of the $5 footlong. I don’t know who got to live that dream. Maybe once or twice, I caught a whisper of it. But by the time adulthood kicked in, it was $11 footlongs and existential dread. Still, the legend remains.
Subway sends coupons like they're trying to win you back in a breakup. And they work. Oh, they work. Because nothing says romantic solo lunch date like a BOGO coupon and two footlongs, knowing full well you're eating both.
Subway is your flavor profile in sandwich form. No rules. No judgment. Just you and the guy asking if you want it toasted.
And the answer is always toasted.
