CHAPTER EIGHT

What You’re Really Drinking

YOU EVER ACTUALLY look at the label on a “zero sugar” drink?

Not the front — that’s marketing.
We’re talking about the fine print.

That black-and-white rectangle on the back.
That boring little chart with numbers and words like “phenylketonurics” and “natural flavors.”

That’s not just nutrition info.

That’s a spellbook.
And once you learn to read it, you realize:
You’re not drinking what you think you’re drinking.

Let’s break down the common cast of characters in your average zero sugar soda or “diet” drink:

1. Carbonated Water

The base. Fizzy. Innocent. Harmless.
Just H₂O with bubbles, right?

Sort of.
It helps carry the flavor — but doesn’t taste like anything on its own. It’s the vessel, not the poison.

2. Artificial Sweeteners

These are the stars of the show.

Usually some mix of:

  • Aspartame – 200x sweeter than sugar. Linked to headaches, mood swings, and controversy for decades.
  • Sucralose – 600x sweeter. Can affect insulin response and gut bacteria.
  • Acesulfame Potassium – 200x sweeter. Often used to hide aftertastes.
  • Saccharin – 300x sweeter. One of the oldest and most disputed.

Together, they create a sweetness that doesn’t come from nature — and your body knows it.

3. Caffeine

Not just a pick-me-up.
A dependency enforcer.

It keeps you coming back.
It builds ritual.
And when you don’t have it? Headaches. Fog. Irritability. (hi, dad)

Caffeine isn’t the bonus.
It’s the anchor.

4. Phosphoric Acid

Used to sharpen the flavor — that “bite” you get.

But it also lowers pH dramatically, which may contribute to:

  • Enamel erosion
  • Gut imbalances
  • Bone density issues (especially if it replaces calcium-rich drinks)

Sounds scary? It’s just standard.

5. “Natural Flavors”

The black box.

This can legally mean almost anything derived from something found in nature — then processed beyond recognition.

It’s flavor science. It’s proprietary.
And you’ll never know what it actually is.

Why?

Because it’s not food.
It’s intellectual property.

6. Preservatives (like Potassium Benzoate)

Stops mold and bacteria.
Also interacts with vitamin C to potentially create benzene, a known carcinogen.

But only “in certain conditions,” they say.
You trust the conditions, right?

Here’s the trick:

  • The label says 0 calories.
  • The label says 0 sugar.
  • The label says diet, light, clean, even healthy.

But none of that means zero impact.

You’re still drinking:

  • Neurological triggers
  • Gut disruptors
  • Caffeine crutches
  • Metabolic manipulators

And they all pass under the radar — because calories are the only metric we were trained to look for.

That’s not your fault.
You were taught to care about the top row: calories, fat, sugar.

You were told to ignore the bottom: ingredients.

But ingredients are the truth.

Calories are the illusion.

Because it’s not about how much energy is in your drink.

It’s about what it tells your body to do
And how it keeps you coming back for more.
