CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
THE AI AXIS
IN THE BEGINNING, the machine needed people.
People to build it.
People to feed it.
People to use it.
Not anymore.
Now it’s training itself on your language, your images, your face, your voice, your work, your fears, your desires, your decisions.
And it’s doing it through a small, elite network of players who don’t just build software. They build intelligence.
Start with OpenAI.
Once a nonprofit lab, now a crown jewel.
Backed by Microsoft, plugged into Azure, and wielding GPT. A language model so advanced, it became the operating system of modern cognition. Every startup, every app, every government now has its eyes on this tech, or is already using it.
Then there’s Google DeepMind.
The OG monster lab. They built AlphaGo. They built AlphaFold.
They cracked protein folding, mastered board games, and now they’re scaling toward Artificial General Intelligence, thinking systems that can learn anything.
But Google doesn’t stop there.
It’s also running Gemini, its ChatGPT competitor.
All of it sits on Google Cloud. Tight, closed-loop control.
Meanwhile, Amazon is quietly building its own AI war chest. It owns Anthropic, the company behind Claude, a chat model known for safety and long context windows. It owns the infrastructure, with Amazon Web Services as the backbone of half the internet. And it’s integrating AI into logistics, delivery, hiring, ads, and cloud surveillance. Not as a tool, but as a system.
Then there’s NVIDIA.
Not a language model company, but without them, none of this works.
Their GPUs are the heart and lungs of AI.
They used to just power gaming rigs. Now they power AI clusters, training models on trillions of tokens, running matrix math across warehouse-sized servers. They’re printing chips that govern the future.
And behind them all?
Facebook has LLaMA.
Elon has Grok.
China has Baidu’s Ernie, Alibaba’s Qwen, and ByteDance’s shadow labs.
IBM is pivoting into quantum AI.
Startups everywhere are fine-tuning open-source models, hungry for a piece of cognition control.
The axis is forming.
And unlike other industries, this isn’t just about profit.
It’s about who controls cognition.
AI decides what you see, what you read, what’s flagged as “unsafe,” what’s summarized for your boss, what’s translated in court, what’s recommended for your kid, what’s likely to be true, what’s likely to be criminal, and which job applications make it through the filter.
The AI Axis isn’t just building tools. It’s building gateways into law, school, medicine, defense, hiring, warfare, elections, and god-mode surveillance.
And the models get better every day.
Because they train on us.
Every word. Every post. Every voice memo. Every camera angle.
You’ve already been sampled.
This is the new infrastructure.
Not hardware.
Not wires.
Thought.
And the ones who control it?
A tiny handful.
Backed by trillion-dollar empires.
Working in closed rooms.
With private datasets.
And no brakes.
