CHAPTER EIGHT
Keys of the Priesthood
BEFORE THERE WERE bishops in white shirts and nametags biking uphill in Salt Lake heat, there were keys. Not literal ones, though if there were, Joseph probably would’ve lost them in a hat somewhere. No — we’re talking spiritual keys. Divine, invisible credentials that said: This dude speaks for God now.
In Mormon cosmology, the priesthood isn’t just a role — it’s the actual power of God delegated to men on Earth. Like a cosmic utility company, priesthood holders are the authorized technicians allowed to flip switches, connect wires, and perform ordinances that echo into eternity.
There are two main outlets:
- Aaronic Priesthood: The "lesser" priesthood, named after Moses' brother Aaron. It covers temporal and preparatory rites — baptisms, sacrament, and repentance. Think of it as the lobby pass. You’re in the building, but not on the executive floor yet.
- Melchizedek Priesthood: The "higher" one, named after the mysterious priest-king who shows up in Genesis like a DLC character with zero backstory. This priesthood covers spiritual big-leagues — blessings, confirmations, sealing marriages for eternity, organizing entire branches of heaven. It's CEO access.
Enter: angels.
According to Joseph, in May 1829, he and Oliver Cowdery were out translating the Book of Mormon when John the Baptist literally appeared and laid hands on their heads, giving them the Aaronic Priesthood. That’s the warm-up.
Shortly after, Peter, James, and John (yes, those three — from the New Testament dream team) popped in from beyond the veil and bestowed the Melchizedek Priesthood, restoring apostolic authority that had supposedly vanished after the death of Christ’s original disciples.
Without priesthood keys, you’re just another guy in a robe making bold claims. With them, you’re a divine representative. You can baptize, bless, heal, seal, and lead — all with heaven’s signature stamped on it.
This priesthood authority became the foundation of the LDS Church's structure. Every calling, every ordinance, every mission is authorized by someone who has the keys — and those keys trace in an unbroken line back to Joseph, and from Joseph back to Peter, James, John… and then to Christ.
The priesthood model wasn’t invented out of thin air. You can trace its DNA in ancient traditions:
- Hebrew High Priests
- Zoroastrian fire keepers
- Egyptian temple rituals
- Catholic apostolic succession
- And yes — Freemasonry’s hierarchical rites, which Joseph was also familiar with
It’s a blend of the ancient and the divine, wrapped in a distinctly American frontier package.
