CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

The Charmer-in-Chief Who Talked His Way Into—and Out of—Everything

SO.
WILLIAM JEFFERSON Clinton.
Born in 1946 in Hope, Arkansas.
Raised by a single mom.
Smart as hell. Ambitious early.
Met JFK as a teen—never forgot it.

Went to Georgetown, then Oxford, then Yale Law, where he met Hillary Rodham—future senator, Secretary of State, and thunderstorm in a pantsuit.

He became governor of Arkansas young—lost it—then came back and won again.

Get used to that pattern.

In 1992, he ran for president as “The Comeback Kid.”
Slick, youthful, sax-playing, fast-talking governor.
Up against George H. W. Bush (war hero, recession baggage) and Ross Perot (wild card billionaire independent).

Clinton barely squeaked by—but he won.
President #42.

And he came in hot.

What he did:

  • Balanced the federal budget
  • Presided over a booming economy and massive job growth
  • Passed welfare reform
  • Signed NAFTA (controversial then, still controversial)
  • Lowered crime (partially through the 1994 Crime Bill—also controversial now)
  • Appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the Supreme Court
  • Managed foreign interventions in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Somalia
  • Promoted tech growth that helped spark the internet explosion

The 1990s were peaceful, prosperous, and filled with dial-up tone nostalgia.

But there was always a shadow creeping in…

And then—Monica Lewinsky.

White House intern.
Inappropriate relationship.
Perjury. Cover-up.
Impeachment.

Yep—he was impeached by the House in 1998 for lying under oath and obstruction of justice.

The Senate acquitted him.
He stayed in office.
Approval ratings went UP during the scandal.

(America was like: “We’re not thrilled, but the economy’s insane right now.”)

And that's Clinton in a nutshell:
Brilliant. Messy. Addictive. Infuriating.
Could walk into a room and charm everyone—then walk out and leave them arguing about it.

He left office in 2001 with:

  • A budget surplus (first in decades)
  • Sky-high economic numbers
  • Lingering moral debates
  • And a strange political legacy: part genius, part cautionary tale

His second act?
Global philanthropy.
Launched the Clinton Foundation.
Worked on disaster relief with George H. W. Bush (wild but wholesome duo).
Always on the speaker circuit.
Always somehow… still in the room.

So here’s to Bill Clinton.
The Comeback Kid.
The policy wonk wrapped in charm and chaos.
The man who could make you furious—and still make you laugh.

Rest in rhythm, Bill.
You rode the wave—
and almost wiped out.
