CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

The UN Map

WHO COUNTS, AND Who Decides?

If you want to know what counts as a country — don’t ask a globe.
Ask the United Nations.

Because in this bureaucratic game of global Monopoly, the UN is the one handing out deeds.

The magic number is 193.

That’s the number of full member states in the UN.

It’s not every place with a flag.
Not every territory with a government.
Not every border with a history.

But it is the official guest list — the roster of nations that get a seat, a mic, a vote, and a tiny plaque with their name on it.

Who’s on it? The obvious ones:
USA, China, India, Brazil, Germany, etc.

But also the little guys:
Tuvalu. Nauru. San Marino. Micronesia.

If they’re on the list, they’re “real.”
Even if they’re the size of a college campus.

In addition to the 193 members, there are two observer states:

  • Palestine
  • Vatican City

They can sit in the room. They can speak. They can participate.
But they can’t vote.

It’s like being invited to the party… but no drink tickets.

The line between a “country” and a “territory” is thinner than you think.
Sometimes, it’s just a vote away.

The UN doesn’t hand out definitions easily, but there’s a general checklist:

  • Defined territory
  • Permanent population
  • Government
  • And the capacity to enter relations with other states

But even that’s up for debate.
Because politics always trumps paperwork.

Ask Taiwan.
Ask Palestine.
Ask anyone who holds a passport no one accepts.

Technically? The UN General Assembly decides who’s in or out.
But behind the scenes? The Security Council.
And behind them? Power.

Recognition is rarely about truth — it’s about leverage.

If a superpower doesn’t like you, you're not getting in.
If a coalition of allies does like you, you might sneak through.

That’s why the UN map isn’t a map of facts.
It’s a map of power dynamics, drawn in ink and diplomacy.

So, who counts?

Depends who’s counting.
And what they stand to gain.
