The Method Itself
BY THE 17TH century, the world had changed.
Science wasn’t just a scattered collection of ideas anymore.
It was becoming a process, a disciplined way of asking questions and forcing reality to answer.
And that process?
It started to look like something you could teach, refine, and repeat.
This is where science becomes science.
Bacon didn’t invent the scientific method, but he gave it its clearest early form.
He believed knowledge shouldn’t come from authority or tradition, but from experience.
From the ground up.
From the evidence out.
Observe the world.
Look for patterns.
Form hypotheses.
Test them through direct experimentation.
And don’t trust anything that can’t be proven.
This was inductive reasoning. Building truth from real-world inputs, not ivory tower theory.
Across the channel, Descartes took a different route.
He didn’t start with observation, he started with doubt.
What can I know for sure?
What survives when I question everything?
He boiled it all the way down to the classic line: “I think, therefore I am.”
From there, he rebuilt knowledge using logic, math, and reductionism.
Take complex systems.
Break them into simpler parts.
Solve each part.
This wasn’t experimentation, it was rational structure.
But when combined with Bacon’s empiricism, something powerful emerged:
A full-spectrum toolset for understanding reality.
What emerged from this era wasn’t just a vibe, it was a method.
Not a one-size-fits-all formula, but a mindset with core components.
Ask a clear, testable question.
Form a hypothesis.
Design an experiment.
Control the variables.
Record the results.
Repeat it, or let someone else try.
And if the results hold… then it might be true.
The power wasn’t just in the discovery.
It was in the repeatability.
A fact wasn’t sacred. It was provisional, valid only until better data came along.
As this method spread, so did the need for tools.
Not just telescopes and notebooks, but spaces where controlled testing could happen.
The laboratory became the new chapel.
The microscope, the new relic.
The peer-reviewed paper, the new scripture.
Science wasn’t something lone geniuses did in candlelit studies anymore.
It became a collaborative system, shared through books, journals, and lectures across Europe.
The method didn’t just produce answers, it produced credibility.
You didn’t have to believe someone because they were a priest, a king, or a philosopher.
You could believe them because their results made sense and you could test them yourself.
Science had rules now.
And those rules didn’t just uncover the world.
They reshaped it.
