CHAPTER FOUR

Save Files and Memory Wipes

LET’S START WITH a hard truth:

If you remembered everything, it wouldn’t work.
The game wouldn’t play right.
The story would glitch.

You’d spawn in, crying in a hospital, and immediately scream, “Oh great. Not this timeline again.”
Then you’d quit.

That’s not the point.

The point is to forget.
Not because forgetting is a flaw, but because forgetting is the mechanic.

You don’t remember your past lives for the same reason you don’t carry XP from one video game into another.
This run is calibrated.
This run is specific.
This run is yours.

If you booted up with all the memories of heartbreaks, revolutions, and regrets from your last ride, you wouldn’t grow.
You’d repeat.
Or worse, you’d collapse under the weight of your own history.

This isn’t punishment.
It’s protection.

Your soul has save files.
They exist.
They’re all there. Every lifetime, every love, and every last breath.
But they’re stored in a part of your consciousness you can’t normally access.

You don’t get to pull them up on demand.
Not yet.

Because the key to accessing the saves… isn’t remembering.
It’s earning.

When you’re ready, the past starts leaking through the seams.
That weird familiarity?
The instant connection with a stranger?
That dream that didn’t feel like a dream?

Those are echoes from older saves.
You’re not broken.
You’re remembering sideways.

Because direct memory would overwhelm you.
So you get it in metaphor.
In feeling.
In deja vu.

Until you’re leveled up enough to handle the rest.

You’re not meant to be haunted by your past.
You’re meant to be guided by it.
Quietly. Gently. Like breadcrumbs in the code.

You’ll know when it’s time to unlock the rest.
Not because you searched hard enough, But because you became the version of you who could hold it.

This isn’t a punishment for forgetting.
This is a gift.

Because when the memories return, you’ll know they came back.
Not because you needed them… but because you earned them.
