CHAPTER SEVEN

Feeding the Beast

YOU ARE WHAT you eat.
And what you eat is what they paid to legalize.

The food industry, Big Ag, Big Meat, Big Sugar, Big Soda, Big Everything, has spent decades using lobbyists to shape what ends up on your plate, what gets labeled “safe,” and what gets hidden behind Nutrition Facts labels so vague they might as well say “good luck.”

This isn’t about feeding people.
It’s about feeding profits.

And to do that, they had to feed Congress first.

You assume that if something is on the shelf, it must be fine.
Tested. Regulated. Approved.
Why else would it be for sale?

But here’s what you don’t know:
Many of the chemicals in your food have never been independently tested by the government.
Some of them are banned in other countries, but still sold here.
The FDA doesn’t directly test most food additives. It lets the companies do it themselves under a loophole called “GRAS,” Generally Recognized As Safe.

And who decides what’s “generally recognized”?

Industry scientists.

It’s not regulation.
It’s self-certification with a business incentive.

For decades, Americans were told fat was the enemy.
Low-fat this. Fat-free that.
“Eat margarine. Avoid eggs. Trust the pyramid.”

But what actually caused the heart disease spike?

Sugar.

And the sugar industry knew it.

In the 1960s, they paid Harvard researchers to publish studies that blamed fat instead while burying evidence that linked sugar to heart disease.

The result?
A national nutrition policy built on a lie.

And to this day, sugar stays largely unregulated, heavily marketed, and dumped into everything from bread to salad dressing to baby food.

Agricultural giants like Monsanto (now Bayer), Cargill, and ADM have spent hundreds of millions lobbying to protect pesticides, block GMO labeling laws, kill environmental regulations, and pass subsidies that guarantee profit even when crops fail.

Roundup?
Linked to cancer, banned in dozens of countries, but still sprayed across U.S. farmland.

Why?

Because chemical companies wrote the rules.
Then hired former regulators.
Then sued states that tried to warn people.

Ever wonder why a salad costs $8 but a cheeseburger costs $1?

Because we subsidize corn, wheat, soy, and dairy, the core ingredients of ultra-processed junk, but not fruits or vegetables.

That’s not an accident.
It’s a policy outcome lobbied into place by Big Ag.

They want high-fructose corn syrup in everything?
Done.
They want soy fillers instead of protein?
Done.
They want to keep dumping surplus dairy into fake food products?
Done.

And we wonder why chronic disease rates keep climbing.

So they say “Don’t blame us! It’s personal choice!”

Ah yes, the classic defense.

Except your school lunch program was written by lobbyists.
Your grocery shelves were stocked by distributors with lobby ties.
Your portion sizes were inflated by marketing departments with no oversight.
And your cravings were engineered in food labs funded by companies that study addiction like it’s a feature, not a bug.

This isn’t freedom.
It’s behavioral manipulation with a nutrition label.

The USDA, FDA, and EPA are supposed to protect us.
Instead, they’ve been captured. Flooded with lobbyists, ex-industry execs, and political appointees who rotate between public duty and private profits.

One day they’re approving a pesticide.
The next day they’re working for the company that makes it.

Same story, different aisle.

America has the highest obesity rates in the developed world, exploding rates of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, and a food system that feeds disease then sells you medicine for it

And behind it all?
A network of lobbyists who turned your body into a recurring revenue model.

They feed the beast.
And the beast feeds them back.
