You Are Not Your Number
LET’S SAY IT straight:
You are not your IQ.
You never were.
You are not your SAT score.
Your GPA.
Your percentile.
Your performance review.
Your diagnosis.
Your placement level.
Your “potential.”
You are not a number.
But the world keeps trying to make you one.
Because numbers are easy.
They’re neat. They’re sortable. They fit in databases, line graphs, and policy memos. They feel scientific. They feel objective. They feel fair.
But they’re not.
They’re shaped by the test-writers. The score-setters. The curriculum designers. The historians, the economists, and the gatekeepers of access. They decide what counts, what matters, and what even qualifies as intelligence.
And it’s never the whole story.
Because here’s the thing about intelligence:
It’s not static.
It’s not linear.
It’s not something you can print out on paper and file away in a folder forever.
It’s improvisational.
It’s situational.
It’s adaptive.
It’s weird.
It’s the immigrant learning a new language in three months.
It’s the addict rebuilding a life after ten years on the street.
It’s the mechanic who never finished school but can rebuild a diesel engine blindfolded.
It’s the single mom juggling four jobs and still remembering every kid’s allergy.
It’s the artist no one believed in.
The student who was told they were slow until someone taught them the right way.
The thinker who bloomed at 40.
The genius who never looked like one.
That’s real intelligence.
And it doesn’t show up on a test.
Because tests can’t measure hunger.
They can’t measure struggle.
They can’t measure heart.
They can’t measure the way someone stares down life and says, not today.
Every time we reduce intelligence to a score, we erase someone’s story.
And every time we rank people by that score, we help write a system that’s too blind to see its own failure.
