Polybius


THE GAME THAT played you back.

In the early 1980s, stories began to swirl around a mysterious arcade cabinet that showed up in Portland, Oregon. Black casing. No branding. Just one word: Polybius.

The game allegedly caused strange effects—headaches, seizures, nightmares, memory loss. Some said it made players addicted in seconds. Others said it made them forget they even played it. And then it was gone.

No photos. No units recovered. Just whispers and one grainy description:
Vector graphics. Hypnotic puzzles. Something like Tempest, but deeper, stranger.

Oh, and men in black suits.

Some players claimed shadowy figures came to collect the data from the machines. Not quarters—data. As if Polybius wasn’t for entertainment. As if it was a test.

Theories?
Government psyops.
CIA brainwave experiments.
MKUltra 2.0 for the joystick generation.

There’s even a real company—Sinneslöschen, a fake-sounding German name meaning “sensory deletion.” Totally real… according to the trademark. Totally fake… according to reality.

No one can prove Polybius existed.
No one can prove it didn’t.
And arcade owners still tell the story like a ghost tale to scare new hires.

Maybe it was a hoax.
Or maybe it was a prototype of something we were never supposed to play.

And if it was real?
There might still be one out there.
Plugged in.
Waiting.
