CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The Great Silence: Maybe They’re Watching, Maybe They’re Waiting
WE’VE SENT SIGNALS.
We’ve built telescopes.
We’ve launched golden records into space.
We’ve scanned the sky for decades.
Nothing.
No response.
No static.
No knock on the galactic door.
This is the Fermi Paradox:
If the universe is so big and so old, and life is statistically likely...
Where is everybody?
Theory 1: We’re early.
Maybe intelligent life is rare.
Maybe we’re the first.
Maybe others are still crawling out of their oceans.
It’s a comforting thought.
Also a lonely one.
Theory 2: We’re quarantined.
What if we’re interesting?
Dangerous?
What if the galactic community saw our nuclear tests and said,
“Not yet.”
Maybe they’re letting us grow.
Or waiting for us to self-destruct.
Look, but don’t touch.
Zoo rules.
Theory 3: The filter.
Some say life is common…
But intelligent, technological civilizations don’t last.
War. Collapse. AI.
The Great Filter wipes them out.
If it’s behind us, we’re rare.
If it’s ahead of us, we’re doomed.
Nobody’s calling back…
because nobody made it.
Theory 4: They're here. We just don’t see them.
Ants don’t notice skyscrapers.
We might be missing something obvious.
A wavelength. A mindset.
A protocol.
Maybe they did respond.
Maybe it wasn’t a message.
Maybe it was a feeling. A dream. A push.
The silence isn’t empty.
It’s loud.
It’s buzzing.
It’s full of questions.
And maybe that’s the point.
Maybe the silence was the first test.
And we're still trying to hear ourselves.
