CHAPTER TWELVE

History as a Mirror

EVERY GENERATION REWRITES the past.

They have to.

Because history isn’t just what was.
It’s what we think it was and what we need it to be, so we can live with ourselves in the present.

We’ve always looked backward to move forward.

We cast ourselves as heroes.
We bury the blood.
We elevate the myths that make us feel proud,
and suppress the truths that make us feel small.

But the mirror never lies.

Even when it’s cracked, warped, pixelated, or filtered through 12 historians and a TikTok comment section.
It still shows you you.

Because history doesn’t just reveal the past.
It reveals the storyteller.

Their fears.
Their values.
Their blind spots.
Their beliefs.

That’s the secret:

History is us, trying to explain us, to us.

And one day, someone will try to explain you.

They’ll summarize this era.
They’ll condense your life into a paragraph.
They’ll guess at your motives, your culture, and your timeline.

And they’ll get it wrong.

Because that’s what history does.

But maybe, if you live consciously enough, honestly enough, and bravely enough, you’ll leave a trail they can’t easily rewrite.

Maybe they won’t just see what you did.
They’ll see what you meant.

And maybe they’ll see themselves in the mirror, too.
