CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Reverse Flash: Hatred That Loops

EOBARD THAWNE DID not start out as a villain. He started as a fan.

In his future, the Flash was a legend. Thawne idolized him. He studied his life. He recreated the experiment that gave Barry his powers. He wanted to be a hero. He wanted to matter. But the closer he got to that legacy, the more he realized he would never be part of it.

The Flash was not his friend. The Flash was his obstacle.

That revelation shattered him. What began as admiration turned to bitterness. Then that bitterness calcified into obsession. And that obsession found fuel in time travel. Once he gained access to the timeline, Thawne didn’t just want revenge, he wanted significance. If he could not be the hero, he would become the reason the hero existed. He would weave himself into Barry’s life so tightly that they could never be separated.

And that is exactly what he did.

He went back. He murdered Barry’s mother. He created the wound that defined the Flash. He inserted himself into Barry’s history like a parasite. He made himself essential by becoming the source of Barry’s grief.

That is the cruelty of Reverse Flash. He is not trying to destroy Barry Allen. He is trying to complete him. But in the most violent, intimate way possible. He believes their fates are intertwined. He wants to be hated, remembered, and feared. If he cannot be loved as a hero, he will be needed as a villain.

Every time Barry tries to outrun his past, Thawne is waiting. Every time the timeline resets, Thawne finds a way back in. He is not powered by a cause or a belief. He is powered by pettiness. He is fueled by the unbearable truth that he was never special. And instead of accepting that, he rewrites history until it feels like he mattered.

But he never does. Not really.

That is the tragedy. All that speed. All that genius. All that effort. And it’s still a one-way loop of resentment. He lives in Barry’s shadow and he knows it. That’s why he smiles when Barry suffers. That’s why he taunts him. That’s why he keeps coming back. He wants to be the defining force in Barry’s life, even if it means being the worst thing that ever happened to him.

Eobard Thawne is not just the Reverse Flash. He is the dark timeline itself. A man who realized he couldn’t become a hero and decided to become the story instead.
