PROLOGUE
BEFORE THE LAWS…
Before the flags…
Before the taxes, armies, ballots, and bureaucrats…
There was just one question:
Who gets to tell the rest of us what to do?
That question has shaped every tribe, empire, revolution, and constitution in human history. It’s the invisible engine behind kings and congresses, parliaments and puppet states. And the answer has never been simple or stable.
We’ve tried everything.
We’ve handed the throne to warlords, prophets, bloodlines, bureaucrats, and billionaires. We’ve bent the knee to pharaohs and popes, cheered for tyrants and strongmen, marched in the streets for democracy, and burned it all down when it failed.
Sometimes power came from the sword.
Sometimes from the gods.
Sometimes from a vote, real or rigged.
And sometimes it just showed up in a suit, behind a desk, already in charge.
This book is about how we figured it out.
Or at least, how we tried to.
From tribal chiefs to modern cabinets, sacred kings to surveillance states, we’re tracing the wild, violent, hilarious, and often tragic evolution of human rule. Not just what worked, but what broke. Not just who ruled, but why they were allowed to.
Because the story of government is the story of us. Our fears, our myths, our need for order, and our constant resistance to it.
And if it all still feels a little broken?
That’s because the game never ends.
We’re still working on it.
