The Assembly Line and the Algorithm


HENRY FORD DIDN’T invent the assembly line. He just turned it into a god.

The idea was borrowed from slaughterhouses. In Chicago’s meatpacking industry, disassembly lines were used to butcher animals with terrifying speed: carcasses hung from hooks, passed from man to man, each one slicing a single piece. Ford reversed the process. Instead of carving pigs, he’d build cars. Part by part. Man by man.

Before the line, it took 12 hours to build a single Model T.

After the line? 90 minutes.

The secret wasn’t speed alone. It was segmentation. One worker didn’t build a car, he installed a bolt. All day. Every day. Over and over. No thinking. No improvisation. Just motion.

It was beautiful.

It was inhuman.

Each station became a cog in a larger organism, and each man became a cog within the station. Ford didn’t just optimize labor. He eliminated thinking. You didn’t need skilled workers. You just needed obedient ones. This was the genius: by breaking jobs into tiny parts, he broke workers into tiny roles.

The factory became a living algorithm.

A pre-digital computer that spat out cars.

And it worked.

Production skyrocketed. Costs plummeted. Wages rose (we’ll get to that). The dream of car ownership spread like wildfire. Other industries copied the model. Soon, everything from furniture to food was being mass-produced.

But something subtle happened in the process.

As the cars became more consistent, the people became less so. The assembly line didn’t just reshape the factory, it reshaped the worker. He no longer needed experience or creativity. He just needed hands. Fast hands.

This was industrial perfection.

This was psychological erosion.

Burnout rates exploded. Injury was common. Monotony became maddening. Turnover was so high Ford had to double wages just to keep workers from quitting (more on that in the next chapter). Factory life wasn’t just hard, it was soul-erasing.

But the system didn’t care.

The line must move.

And the world began to follow. Not just in factories, but in schools, offices, and governments. Efficiency became morality. Repetition became order. “Good” became synonymous with “on time.”

And that hum you hear in the background?

That’s the algorithm, still running.
