A World of Machines
ONCE DESCARTES LOCKED in the Cogito, he had a base to build from. But now he had to answer the next question: if the mind exists, what about everything else?
Specifically, what about the body?
He didn’t say the body wasn’t real. He said it wasn’t necessary for the mind to exist. And if that was true, then the body wasn’t who you were. It was just… the thing you were in. That opened up a whole new way of thinking about reality.
So Descartes split them.
Mind.
And matter.
Thinking stuff and extended stuff.
The ghost and the machine.
This idea, that the mind and body are separate, is now called dualism. And while Descartes wasn’t the first person to suggest it, he was the one who made it stick. He said the mind was a thinking, non-material substance. The body was a mechanical, physical one. They were connected, but not the same.
That distinction exploded.
If the body was just matter, just gears and levers and fluids, then you could study it like any other machine. You didn’t have to worry about souls or demons or metaphysical interference. You could take it apart, measure it, test it, and fix it. That’s modern medicine. That’s neuroscience. That’s anatomy class.
And at the same time, the mind became its own problem. What was it? Where was it? How did it interact with the body? Descartes guessed the two talked to each other through a tiny part of the brain called the pineal gland, mostly because it was the only part that wasn’t split in two. That theory didn’t hold up, but the question stayed.
He basically launched two fields at once: mechanical biology and the philosophy of consciousness.
That’s not bad for one idea.
People loved the clarity. For scientists, it meant they could finally study the body without getting yelled at by the Church. For philosophers, it meant they could take the mind seriously as its own thing. And for Descartes, it meant his Method was working.
But there was a cost.
The more people treated the body like a machine, the easier it was to ignore the parts that didn’t fit. Pain, emotion, memory, trauma, all the messy human stuff got pushed to the side. And the more people thought of the mind as separate, the harder it became to explain how it could affect the body at all.
Still, the split was done. The gears were turning.
The soul was no longer the only one in charge of the body. The body ran itself.
