CHAPTER SEVEN

China

THE SURVEILLANCE STATE

China isn’t a dictatorship in the traditional sense.
It doesn’t need to silence you with violence.
It just watches you until you silence yourself.

This isn’t control through fear.
It’s control through data.
And the algorithm always wins.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has ruled since 1949.
No elections. No opposition. No power-sharing.
Just the Party, everywhere. In your school, your job, your phone, and your family dinner.

It’s not just a government.
It’s a belief system with satellites.

Xi Jinping doesn’t yell.
He doesn’t need to.

The system does it for him.

China is home to the most advanced surveillance system on Earth.

CCTV cameras? Millions.
Facial recognition? Normalized.
Phone tracking? Expected.
Drones, scanners, internet filters? All operational, 24/7.

Every move, message, purchase, and protest is recorded, cross-referenced, and archived.

And then there’s the Social Credit System. A real, gamified score that tracks your “trustworthiness.”

Miss a bill or break a rule?
Points deducted.

Hang out with someone critical of the state?
Points deducted.

End up with a low score?
Say goodbye to trains, planes, loans, schools, jobs, and dating apps.

You’re not punished.
You’re excluded.

In the western region of Xinjiang, China isn’t just watching.
It’s erasing.

Over a million Uyghur Muslims have been detained in “re-education” camps, locked up, abused, indoctrinated, and pressured to renounce their faith.

Their crime?
Being Uyghur.

Mosques destroyed.
Long beards banned.
Qurans burned.
Children separated.
Languages forbidden.

This isn’t assimilation.
It’s cultural deletion with surveillance software.

Google doesn’t exist.
YouTube doesn’t exist.
Blocked.

Instead, you get WeChat, Baidu, and state-run platforms, all monitored, censored, and filtered through the CCP firewall.

Say “Tiananmen” online?
Account deleted.
Say “freedom”?
Shadowbanned.
Say “Xi Jinping looks like Winnie the Pooh”?
Congratulations, you’re now a domestic terrorist.

In China, obedience becomes reflex.

It’s not because the cops knocked.
It’s because they could.

It’s not because you’re censored.
It’s because you censored yourself first.

And over time, you don’t even notice the silence.
You just stop asking questions.

That’s the real genius of the system.
It doesn’t need to beat you.
It just predicts you.
