CHAPTER TWELVE
Float Together
THE SWINGS WERE empty after lunch.
A breeze was pushing clouds along like big balloons in the sky.
Pebble walked to the swings and sat.
Bluster watched from the blacktop.
He hesitated. Then bounced over.
He sat on the swing beside her.
It creaked. He wobbled.
Pebble held the chains steady.
Bluster giggled.
Pebble didn’t say anything.
So Bluster did.
“I used to be scared I’d float away.”
Pebble looked at him.
“Why?”
“I didn’t think anything could hold me down. Not in a good way.”
They swung in silence for a while.
She kicked slowly.
He wobbled with the wind.
“You’re heavy,” he said.
“You’re light,” she said.
And just like that.
They balanced.
Just right.
One swing dipped low.
One swing soared high.
Then they met in the middle.
Then again.
Up and down, together.
Not a word more. Not one needed.
