Enlightenment, Emancipation, and Backlash
THE ENLIGHTENMENT WAS supposed to be the age of reason. Light over darkness. Rights over tradition. Kings were questioned, churches pushed back, and the idea of universal man, rational, free, and equal, started taking shape.
But there was a catch.
Universal never really meant everyone.
As revolutions spread, first America, then France, then the rest, Jews were suddenly invited into the modern world. France emancipated them in 1791. Germany and Austria followed slowly. The ghetto walls came down. Jews became lawyers, doctors, professors, bankers, and artists. For the first time in centuries, they were allowed into the public square.
And right then, the backlash began.
Because as long as Jews were invisible, they were manageable. But once they started entering salons, publishing books, making money, and running for office, people panicked. The hate didn’t go away. It evolved. From theology to ideology. From heresy to biology.
The new world didn’t say “the Jews killed Christ.” It said “the Jews control everything.”
They weren’t accused of blasphemy. They were accused of conspiracy.
Antisemitism became modern.
Magazines started printing caricatures: the hooked nose, the greedy grin, the spider spinning a web over Europe. Writers and “scientists” classified Jews as an inferior or parasitic race. They weren’t part of the nation, they were an infestation inside it. Not because of belief, but because of blood.
This wasn’t fringe thought. It was fashionable. It appeared in novels, newspapers, political speeches, and café conversations. It was Enlightenment logic gone septic. If the world could be perfected, then someone must be corrupting it and the Jew became that corruption.
Then came the trials.
In Russia, after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881, pogroms erupted across the empire. Jewish homes and businesses were destroyed. Women raped. Entire villages burned. The state looked the other way, sometimes it joined in.
In France, a decorated Jewish army captain named Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused of treason in 1894. The trial was a sham. The evidence was forged. And when it came to light that he was innocent, half the country still didn’t care. “Guilty because he’s Jewish” was enough.
That was the climate.
The world had offered Jews a deal: join modernity and you’ll be safe. But the deal was a lie. The more Jews succeeded, the more they were resented. And now, the hatred had institutions behind it. Courts, newspapers, and political parties.
Antisemitism wasn’t just old anymore. It was industrial.
And it was about to enter its most dangerous phase yet.
